SOE is organising a special reunion at #SMUHOCO22, with a networking lunch and talk by one of its alumni, Poh Lip Hang. Lip Hang will share his insights about the Digital Market Act that was introduced by the European Union in March this year. 

In March 2022, the European Union introduced the Digital Markets Act, forcing sweeping changes to how Big Tech companies operate in Europe. The Digital Markets Act introduced the concept of a "Gatekeeper" in digital markets and imposes greater regulatory scrutiny on such gatekeepers.

The 'Gatekeepers' are responsible for ensuring interoperability of their messaging apps and fair access to their shopping platforms and app stores. Digital Markets Act infringements may result in temporary bans on mergers and acquisitions for gatekeepers.

As Singapore strives to become a digital economy, should it follow the EU's lead in regulating Big Tech?

As of end-2021, more than 700 family offices have established roots in the Garden City – a phenomenal five-fold increase since 2017.  As family offices sprout, the ecosystem supporting the island’s new phase of wealth management is growing symbiotically and rapidly. Notably, the landscape of external asset managers (EAMs) and multiple family offices (MFOs) is shaping up rapidly to support the growth in wealth of these families.

In this session, Mr Lawrence Lua will share on the investment expertise that family offices look for, and how EAMs in Singapore can position themselves to support the family offices’ needs. 

Moderated by Prof Mandy Tham, Academic Director of the MWM, Lawrence will be joining our MWM alumni, Marcus Ng (MWM 2009) and Joshua Choo (MWM 2020) on the panel to share the strategies that their EAMs are adopting, to provide value to the family offices in Singapore as well as other value propositions, including the role of an independent asset manager solely focused on crypto assets for high-net-worth clients.
