Exhibition
Masks of Singapore Exhibition
SMU Li Ka Shing Library, Level 2
1 October - 20 November 2022
Having travelled around Singapore, the Masks of Singapore exhibition has arrived to SMU Li Ka Shing Library.
Masks of Singapore features portraits of Singaporeans in their most authentic self, evolved from a local community mental art movement that ran for 6 months in February to September in 2021. The movement also earned for itself, a spot in the Singapore Book of Records for the 'Largest Mosaic of Hand-Sculptured Masks'.
Present your Homecoming Registration Confirmation Email or your SMU digital alumni card on 8 October to gain entry access to SMU Li Ka Shing Library.
Masks of Singapore is a 6-month local community mental health art movement run in 2021 from February to September, where 572 individuals from all walks of life were rallied to participate in a 3-hour self-awareness mask-making workshop. The participants were guided to look deeper into their lives, connect to the core of who they are, and express their TruSelf, aspirations, dreams and hopes for their future onto a physical mask using art as a medium.
Through these workshops, the participants explored the deeper conversations that underpin the mental health struggles many of us battle, consciously and unconsciously. A total of 572 masks were created when the participants were given a safe space to be, to explore, and to connect to what lies at the core of their being when they strip away the daily masks they wear.
These participants include the public (with the youngest participant being 5 years old and the oldest participant being 86 years old) and local communities such as Singapore Children’s Society, Singapore Cancer Society, Dementia Singapore, the Migrant Workers community, the various secondary schools and colleges, as well as employees from corporate organisations.
The movement has set the record for the “Largest Mosaic of Hand-Sculptured Masks” in the Singapore Book of Records and was documented into a photobook with Fujifilm that tells 572 lived stories of individuals from all walks of life in their most authentic self behind the masks created.
